New Age practices didn't save me. God did. I was a meditation guide. A crystal healer and crystal teacher. I did angel readings for my clients. I helped them identify their spirit animals. I cleansed their homes and auras with sage smudging, and did sacred smudgings with Palo Santo wood. And I truly believed in what I was doing.
But when my health took a deadly turn, none of those things helped me. NOT ONE BIT. I realize now that New Age practices had opened me up to attack by the enemy. It wasn't until I turned to God, became a believer and abandoned New Age that my life changed. And I began to heal. Read my health story here.
I had no idea that all of those seemingly harmless practices are actually practices of the occult. At their core, they elevate the perceived power of the earth (or beings) that are, in reality, inherently lower than God. In effect, they devalue the Word and power of God. And in the long run, they will harm you as they did me. If you are a New Ager, I hope these thoughts will help you leave New Age behind.
Also known as smudging, the practice of burning sage in the world of "New Age" is done as part of a ritual which involves the bundling of certain herbs such as sage, cedar, or lavender into sticks and then slow-burning them in a purification ceremony. It is typically done for meditation, for blessing a home or space, to purge auras, eliminate negative vibrations, and for the purpose of healing. It is different than simple incense burning.
In the Bible, burning incense began when God instructed Moses to prepare a specific blend of spices and herbs and to burn them as a holy and perpetual incense offering to the Lord. All other mixtures of spices used for any other purpose than the worship of God in the Tabernacle were expressly forbidden by God. Any form of smudging or sage burning tied to pagan rituals, auras, evil spirits and negative energies, goes against Biblical teaching.
The Bible teaches that God is the only one who can protect people from evil. The forgiveness found in Christ cleanses us from all wickedness. God Almighty is the healer of his people. Believers do not need to resort to burning sage to ward off the devil or his evil spirits.
The Bible does not specifically mention the use of crystals for healing, since the practice of crystal healing is a modern development that was not present in the Biblical era. However, the principles found in Scripture regarding seeking supernatural or spiritual assistance outside of God's provision can be applied to the use of crystals for healing. The Bible emphasizes that God is the ultimate source of healing.
The Bible prohibits practices that involve seeking spiritual or supernatural power outside of God, such as divination and sorcery. Using crystals for healing can fall into this category if it involves attributing supernatural power to the crystals themselves. Throughout Scripture, God is depicted as the healer of physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments.
As for other uses of crystals, the Bible consistently teaches that seeking power, insight, and wisdom should be done through a relationship with God, reliance on His Word, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, rather than through objects like crystals.
While meditation is mentioned in the Bible, it is important to understand that Biblical meditation differs significantly from some modern meditation practices, especially those associated with Eastern religions and New Age spirituality. In the Bible, meditation primarily involves deep reflection on God's Word and His works, aiming to draw closer to Him and understand His will.
New Age meditation often emphasizes self-realization, inner divinity, and unlocking personal power. The focus is on the self as the source of enlightenment and spiritual growth, which contrasts with the Christian view that wisdom and transformation come from God, and God alone.
Many New Age meditation practices aim to alter the state of consciousness, sometimes through techniques like mantra repetition, visualization, or breath control. These altered states are often sought to experience mystical or transcendent realities, which can open individuals to spiritual influences that are not from God.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8, NIV).
The concept of spirit animals, as understood in various indigenous and New Age spiritual traditions, does not have a basis in the Bible. Spirit animals are typically seen as spiritual guides or protectors that take the form of animals, offering wisdom and support to individuals.
The Bible teaches that God Himself is the source of guidance and wisdom for believers. Christians are encouraged to seek guidance directly from God through prayer, reading the Scriptures, and being led by the Holy Spirit. Psalm 32:8 emphasizes God’s role in guiding His people:
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." (Psalm 32:8, NIV).
Angel readings and tarot cards are forms of divination, as they involve attempting to gain insight or predict the future through supernatural means other than direct revelation from God. The Bible explicitly prohibits any form of divination, sorcery, or seeking omens. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 clearly states that such practices are detestable to God.
